Developing a positive mindset isn't about ignoring life's challenges, but rather about approaching them with resilience and optimism.
If you’re going through a hard time, here are 10 crucial steps to help you cultivate a more positive mindset and embrace a happier life — even when it’s at its darkest.
If you’ve been practicing yoga for an extended period of time, it’s likely you’ve heard at least some mention of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Depending on where you practice or who your teacher is, you may have also even learned one or two of them.
Whether you know what they are or not, here’s a quick rundown:
Meditation is a powerful tool that can help you relax, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.
That said, a lot of people find meditation challenging because they struggle to focus. Maybe you think if your mind wanders or if you have any thoughts at all, you’re doing it wrong. Maybe you feel weird having an empty mind. Maybe you have a hard time sitting still, or any other number of reasons you may deter from meditation.
It can be a little intimidating trying to figure out what’s what and what works best for you, so let’s talk a little about the types of yoga, how long they’ve been around, who’s to credit, and how their popularity compares to the others.
Sleep meditation is a specific type of meditation that is designed to help you relax and fall asleep more easily. Guided meditations or ones including positive affirmations work their way into your subconscious mind. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of sleep meditation and how it can help improve your overall health and well-being.
If you are looking for the best beaches to practice yoga and you’ve got a travel bug influencing your thirst for wanderlust, here are some of the top spots around the world to stretch and strengthen your body.
I’ll be honest — I used to hate yoga. Like, if you’d have told me 3 years ago on this date, March 10, 2020, right before the world went under, that I would not only be practicing yoga but also teaching and writing about it, I would have told you you were insane. Not no way, not no how. Alas, here we are.
I am…..? What do you use to fill in the blank? What word or words do you choose to define yourself? Do you say things like “I am a failure?” Or are you more on track with my opening “I am strong and courageous” type affirmations?
Grief is defined as a “deep and poignant distress caused by or as if by bereavement; a cause of such suffering.” While most people associate the immediacy of grief with death, bereavement can take on many shapes. Here’s how yoga can help.
I love seeing live renditions of Disney movies, like Aladdin when it rolled through San Diego a few months ago. I was equally excited to see Peter Pan as it came to town to close out this season of San Diego Broadway.
While the show takes on the same plot of Peter Pan flying into Wendy Darling’s room and taking her and her brothers, Michael and John, off to Neverland, the show’s approach is much more modern, much more racially inclusive, and fortunately much more gay.
“The first time you hear Mrs. Doubtfire’s voice, the very first hello on the phone is the moment I can feel the audience signing the permission slip for me to borrow the character for the evening,” says Rob McClure, who plays Daniel Hillard and Mrs. Doubtfire on the national run of the Mrs. Doubtfire musical.
As a kid, my two favorite Disney movies were Aladdin and The Lion King. With Aladdin especially, I was just as much a fan of the sequels as I was the original, and “A Whole New World” has always been one of my favorite Disney jams.
Needless to say, I was pretty stoked to catch the National Tour of Aladdin on Broadway here in San Diego, and was even fortunate enough to chat with one of the stars, Aaron Choi as Iago, prior to the show.
When you have to put on a show that lives up to the legend that is Michael Jackson, the pressure for perfection is on from jump. MJ: The Musical recently embarked on its first national tour in August 2023 after making its Broadway debut in December 2021, and everyone involved knows exactly how much expectation everyone has to nail it.
Fortunately, they understood the assignment and delivered exactly what they needed to and more.
I'm gonna rouge my knees and roll my stockings down… And all that jazz.
The national tour of Chicago has made its way to San Diego, and the show did not disappoint. Those who are familiar, however, will notice it’s not quite the same as what they’re used to, particularly when it comes to the set design and costumes.
Okay, hang on, I’m still caught up in the tornado that swept me out of the theater and smacked me in the face with one of the most amazing live performances I’ve ever had the fortune of seeing in my life.
All right, now that I’ve picked my jaw up off of the ground, let’s talk about the current national production of The Wiz.
I had mixed emotions heading into the San Diego Civic Theater’s national production of Mamma Mia. I was excited because Abba was one of my father’s favorite bands, and having lost him recently, it felt good to do something I felt honored in his memory. Having a local actress, Alisa Melendez, in a starring role as Sophie Sheridan was also exciting, and I couldn’t wait to see her blow her hometown house down.
What I was nervous about, however, was the fact I hated the movie.
Ever since I saw Black Swan, I get overwhelmed every time I see a live dance and think about what the dancer has had to go through to get to this moment under the spotlight. When the girls do point and I think about their crumpled toes standing on top of wooden blocks within their shoes, I cringe and experience empathy pains as I imagine their cracked and bleeding toenails.
But I’ll be damned if they don’t look good while they’re doing it.
There’s a lot going on in Les Mis, and with the source material being over 1,000 pages long, it’s easy to see how the stories can get so complicated as they weave together. That said, there’s also a reason this show is so timeless, and the production of it at the San Diego Civic Theater was nothing short of a masterclass in how live theater should be done.
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetle—
Okay, hang on a second, I’m getting a little ahead of myself.
Beetlejuice: The Musical (The Musical, The Musical) has officially hit San Diego on its national tour, and the mind trip of fun that took up the three-hour runtime was an awesome deep-dive into the themes and storyline from the original movie it’s based on.
Red, White & Royal Blue is the gay rom-com I never knew I needed.
I was a little hesitant going into this one, in all honesty. I haven’t read the book, written by Casey McQuinston and bearing the same name, but I heard it was really explicit in the language and sexual content department. I’m all here for that, but I guess I was expecting more 50 Shades of Gay and less 10 Things I Hate About You in the final delivery.
After the lights flickered their final call to usher the eager guests to their seats, the ethereal drumbeat of “Etherland — Sound of Mystic Law” started trembling as the curtains opened, and a group of people surrounded a grown Tina Turner, who sat with her back faced away from the audience.
The chant is later revealed to be a Buddhist mantra that played a pivotal role in Turner’s life, which we quickly learned was full of hurt, abuse, and betrayal.

Entertainment
I love being able to see shows from San Diego Broadway, and next year’s 47th season looks like it’s going to blow the rest of them out of the water!
Although season 46 just passed its midway mark with Chicago, they’ve announced the lineup for the 2024-25 season and it really looks like they mean it when they say it’s going to be the best one yet.
Get ready to celebrate a monumental bat mitzvah bash with a touch of chutzpah!

SEX EDUCATION SEASON 4 PLOT
In the upcoming season, the story takes a turn as Moordale Secondary closes its doors, and Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) find themselves at Cavendish Sixth Form College.
I stand at just under 6’6. For some, that sounds like a dream. For me, it’s been quite the point of contention throughout my life. Honestly, it's still something I struggle to accept about myself.
Truth is, regardless of who you are, all eyes fall on you when you walk into a room at that height. I’ve always been among “the tallest” of people, and throughout my life, it has always prevented me from “blending in.”
The first time I saw Skillet live, I got rear-ended by a semi-truck. My parents weren’t fond of the idea of me going to a concert, and my mom was hoping I would change my mind after the accident. I, however, was the first to arrive in line the next day, and pushed my way to the front row center when the doors opened.
Every person has doubts in regards to attaining something they set their mind to, and we must first overcome them to better ourselves and bring ourselves closer to our goal.
The truth is, you know yourself better than anyone else, and the simplest answer to knowing when you’re ready is admitting it to yourself.
Working for yourself sounds like the ideal life situation, does it not? It’s a commonly shared dream amongst people, but most of the time, the dreamer gets caught up in the “How do I”’s.
How do I get started?
How do I make money?
How do I get people interested?
How do I [insert personal dilemma]?
Have you ever felt like you were swirling around in a cyclone of surrealism, overwhelmed and desperate to find a place to rest your longing hands? I have. In January 2014, I embarked on a journey. On that journey, I ventured to a town that, for six years, lived only in my dreams. I crafted an entire book series that was rooted in this town, yet I had never been.

I used to hate drag queens, which seems ironic given the fact there’s very little chance you’re currently here without knowing that I recently did drag for the first time. This experience was made all the better by the fact it was with the iconic Trinity the Tuck, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 4 who’s had a few tremendous runs throughout her time on the show.
In this day and age, there’s negativity everywhere you go. Everyone thinks they’re right about everything and there’s a stark divide when it comes to topics like diversity. On the flip side, there are an equal number of people working toward bringing together a bigger sense of inclusion and awareness as we move toward a broader and more accepting society.
Among those out there making a difference is Justin Renaissance, a San Diego-based pop star who oftentimes works alongside The Trevor Project to bring forward the topic of queer inclusion and self-love.
I’d heard of a lunar, a solar, and a full eclipse, and I’m sure I’ve heard of “annular” before, but I’m not always in the path of totality and don’t get to experience them as often as I would hope.
While I was at the annular event at the Fleet Science Center in San Diego, I had a chance to talk with Dave Decker, the President of the San Diego Astronomy Association, who explained everything I needed to know about eclipses.
Life is cyclical, and the new British anthology, Patterns, examines life’s circles through the perspective of interweaving characters throughout episodes that take on both life and LGBTQ+ themes.
Written by Asad Mughal, the eight-episode series, available on the gay streaming app Dekkoo or to purchase on Amazon Prime, is a masterclass in British humor and a unique look into what it’s like to live life as a queer person.
Anyone who says there’s no musical talent in Monterey, California clearly hasn’t met Mark Banks.
For Mark, music’s beckoning is more of a consistent yank than anything else. Raised in Southern California, he is no stranger to dreaming big.
“Proprioception,” in essence, is just your body’s natural awareness of itself. How it moves, how it takes up space, and how your physical mass exists in the world around you. If you close your eyes and raise your hand, you’ll likely be able to visualize where in the air your hand is, even if you can’t see it. Your proprioception will inform you where in space your hand has landed.
