Travelzoo Takes Travel Weekly's Diversity Initiatives Award

Travelzoo, a media company that provides exclusive offers and experiences for its members, won Travel Weekly's 2022 Magellan Award for Diversity Initiatives.

In a press release issued on PR Newsire, Travelzoo said they took the award in the online travel category for their "In The Spotlight" content series that highlights Black, indigenous and people of color(BIPOC)-owned hospitality companies and entrepreneurs.

The Inspiration Behind Travelzoo's "In The Spotlight"

Launched in February 2021, the series has featured businesses like Salamander Hotels & Resorts, whose founder, Sheila Johnson, also co-founded the BET Network. They've also shown chef Kristen Kish, who remains a growing advocate for LGBTQIA+ youth and the Asian-American community. She uses her platform to elevate issues in underprivilaged youth.

A group of Travelzoo employees got together to create the "In The Spotlight" series. Their goal was to be more deliberate about integrating diversity and belonging to their daily work.

Outside of the featured businesses chosen by Travelzoo, the platform invites interactivity. Travelzoo members and partners can also nominate BIPOC-owned hospitality companies and entrepreneurs they believe deserve the attention.

Travelzoo itself provides over 30 million members exclusive offers and experiences they can't get anywhere else. Their partnership covers over 5,000 top travel suppliers which grant the deals for the members.

The Travel Weekly Magellan Awards

The Magellan Awards, now in its 14th year, honors outstanding innovations and initiatives in the travel industry.

26 distinguished travel industry leaders judged the awards this year. This included Jean-Claude Baumgarten, former CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council; Heather Greenwood Davis, Contributing Editor at National Geographic; and Peter Greenberg, Travel Editor at CBS News.
